Which lake is the largest in Venezuela and one of South America’s major oil-producing areas?

The story behind the answer

Lake Maracaibo is the largest lake in Venezuela and one of South America’s major oil-producing areas.

It lies in northwestern Venezuela and is connected to the Gulf of Venezuela by a narrow strait, allowing ocean-going vessels to reach the lake. Its water is often described as brackish in the northern portion because of tidal influence, while the southern basin receives substantial freshwater from rivers.

The lake’s surrounding Maracaibo Basin contains enormous petroleum reserves. Oil extraction began on a large commercial scale in the early twentieth century, and thousands of wells and platforms have operated in the region. The lake is therefore both a major geographic feature and a central part of Venezuela’s economic history.

Lake Maracaibo is sometimes called a bay rather than a lake because of its connection to the sea. However, standard geographic references classify it as a lake or lagoon-like lake. It is also famous for Catatumbo lightning, a recurring atmospheric phenomenon near the Catatumbo River.
