Which lake is the largest in the Canadian province of Manitoba?

The story behind the answer

Lake Winnipeg is the largest lake in the Canadian province of Manitoba.

The lake covers roughly 24,500 square kilometres and stretches for about 416 kilometres from north to south. Its northern basin is much deeper than its southern basin, while the eastern shore is known for exposed Canadian Shield rock and scenic wilderness.

Lake Winnipeg drains northward through the Nelson River into Hudson Bay. It is part of a large watershed that includes Lake Winnipegosis, Lake Manitoba and numerous rivers flowing from the Canadian Prairies.

Lake Winnipeg is sometimes confused with Lake Manitoba and Lake Winnipegosis because all three names derive from related Indigenous-language traditions. Lake Manitoba is also large, but it is substantially smaller. The city of Winnipeg is not directly on the lake; it lies on the Red and Assiniboine rivers farther south.
