Which lake is the largest in Armenia?
Answer
Lake Sevan
Answer
Lake Sevan
Lake Sevan is the largest lake in Armenia. It lies in the country’s Gegharkunik Province at an elevation of about 1,900 metres above sea level.
The lake is one of the largest high-altitude freshwater lakes in Eurasia. It has two main sections, the larger Maly Sevan and the smaller Maly Sevan, separated by a submerged threshold and peninsula area.
Lake Sevan has been important to Armenia for centuries as a source of fish, water, and cultural landmarks. The medieval Sevanavank monastery stands on a peninsula that was once an island before water levels changed.
During the Soviet period, extensive water withdrawals lowered the lake dramatically. Later conservation measures, including reduced withdrawals and water transfers, helped stabilize its level. Lake Sevan trout, especially the endangered ishkhan, is a famous species associated with the lake.
