Which lake is shared by Switzerland and France and drains into the Rhône?
Answer
Lake Geneva
Answer
Lake Geneva
Lake Geneva is shared by Switzerland and France and drains into the Rhône River.
Lake Geneva, known in French as Lac Léman, lies at the northern side of the Alps. Most of its shoreline belongs to Switzerland, while a western and southern section borders France. The Rhône enters the lake at its eastern end near Le Bouveret and leaves at Geneva on the western end.
The lake covers about 582 square kilometres and is one of western Europe's largest lakes. Major cities on its shores include Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux, and Évian-les-Bains. The surrounding region is known for vineyards, Alpine scenery, international organizations, and tourism.
English speakers commonly call it Lake Geneva, while “Lake Léman” is widely used in French and Swiss contexts. It should not be confused with Geneva Lake in Wisconsin, United States, which is a different and much smaller lake.
