Which lake is shared by Germany, Switzerland and Austria?

The story behind the answer

Lake Constance is shared by Germany, Switzerland, and Austria.

The lake lies on the Rhine at the northern edge of the Alps and consists of the Upper Lake, Lower Lake, and the connecting Seerhein section. Its German name is Bodensee, a name commonly encountered on maps and in local history.

Important cities on or near its shores include Constance, Friedrichshafen, Bregenz, and Lindau. The lake supports tourism, shipping, fishing, drinking-water supplies, and vineyards. The Rhine enters at the southeast and exits toward the west through the lake system.

Unlike many international lakes, the exact boundary across the main body of Lake Constance has historically been treated differently by the neighbouring countries. That legal detail does not change the simple geographic fact: Germany, Switzerland, and Austria all border it. Lake Geneva, by contrast, is shared by Switzerland and France.
