Which lake is shared by Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria?

The story behind the answer

Lake Chad is shared by Chad, Cameroon, Niger and Nigeria.

Lake Chad lies in the Sahel at the meeting point of these four countries. It is a shallow freshwater lake whose size changes greatly with rainfall, river inflow and seasonal flooding. The Chari River, entering from the south, supplies most of its water.

The lake has contracted substantially compared with its extent in the mid-20th century, although its area varies naturally from year to year. Wetlands, islands and shallow channels create a complex environment that supports fishing, farming and livestock herding.

Lake Chad is sometimes presented as having disappeared, but that is inaccurate: the lake still exists, though its open-water area and distribution have changed considerably. The Lake Chad Basin Commission coordinates cooperation among basin countries.
