Which lake is Central America’s largest freshwater lake and contains Ometepe Island?

The story behind the answer

Lake Nicaragua is Central America’s largest freshwater lake and contains Ometepe Island.

Also called Cocibolca or Lake Granada, it covers roughly 8,264 square kilometres in Nicaragua. Ometepe is formed by two volcanoes, Concepción and Maderas, joined by a narrow isthmus. The lake’s outlet is the San Juan River, which flows toward the Caribbean Sea.

Although Lake Nicaragua is connected to the Caribbean, it supports several unusual marine-derived animals, including bull sharks and sawfish. Scientists have debated how these animals reached the lake; the prevailing explanation is that they migrated through the San Juan River system.

The lake was considered in nineteenth-century canal proposals because its western end is relatively close to the Pacific Ocean. The Panama Canal was ultimately selected instead. Lake Nicaragua is distinct from nearby Lake Managua, which is smaller and has no direct river connection to the Caribbean.
