Which lake, also called Golfo Dulce, is Guatemala's largest lake?

Lake Izabal, also called Golfo Dulce, is Guatemala’s largest lake.

Located in the department of Izabal near the Caribbean coast, the lake covers roughly 590 square kilometres. It receives much of its water from the Polochic River and drains eastward through the smaller Golfete Dulce and the navigable Río Dulce toward the Gulf of Honduras.

Its low elevation and connection to the Caribbean have made the lake historically important for transport and trade. The Castillo de San Felipe de Lara, built in 1652, guarded the route against pirate attacks. Communities around the lake include Maya Q’eqchi’ settlements, while the surrounding wetlands and forests support manatees, jaguars, monkeys and many bird species.

The name can cause confusion because Golfo Dulce is also used for the smaller Golfete Dulce in the lake’s outflow system. In this question, Golfo Dulce is the alternate name for the much larger Lake Izabal itself.
