Which label did Foo Fighters sign with after leaving Capitol Records?

The story behind the answer

Foo Fighters signed with RCA Records after leaving Capitol Records.

The move happened in 1999, after Capitol president Gary Gersh—who had originally signed the band—left the label. Foo Fighters had a key-man clause allowing them to depart if Gersh was no longer there. The band exercised that clause and moved to RCA as it prepared its third album, There Is Nothing Left to Lose.

The arrangement is sometimes simplified as a straightforward label switch, but Roswell Records, Dave Grohl’s imprint, remained central to the band’s releases. RCA also later acquired the rights to Foo Fighters’ earlier Capitol albums. This can cause confusion because the band’s first two albums were originally released through Roswell and Capitol, while later albums carried RCA/Roswell credits.

RCA’s relationship with Foo Fighters continued for much of the band’s major-label era, including albums such as One by One, In Your Honor, Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, and Wasting Light.
