Which La Liga team is known as 'Los Colchoneros'?
Answer
Atlético Madrid
Answer
Atlético Madrid
Atlético Madrid is the La Liga team known as Los Colchoneros, meaning “The Mattress Makers.” The nickname comes from Atlético’s traditional red-and-white vertical stripes, which resembled the striped ticking used on old mattresses in Spain.
The club was founded in Madrid in 1903 as Athletic Club Sucursal de Madrid, a branch connected to Athletic Bilbao. Atlético adopted its familiar red-and-white striped identity in the early twentieth century, and the visual resemblance helped make Colchoneros a lasting nickname for the players and supporters.
Atlético has several other nicknames. Rojiblancos means “red-and-whites,” while Los Indios, or “the Indians,” became especially associated with the club from the 1970s. The latter nickname has several competing explanations, including the arrival of South American players and the club’s traditional rivalry with Real Madrid.
Atlético’s main city rivalry is the Madrid derby against Real Madrid. Its home ground is the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, while the club’s historic stadium was the Vicente Calderón.
