Which club finished second in La Liga in the 2002-03 season?

The story behind the answer

Real Sociedad finished second in La Liga in the 2002–03 season.

Managed by Raynald Denoueix, Real Sociedad mounted one of the club’s strongest title challenges in decades. They collected 76 points, finishing just behind champions Real Madrid, who had 78. Deportivo de La Coruña placed third, four points behind Real Sociedad.

The team combined a prolific attack with experienced international talent. Turkish forward Nihat Kahveci scored 23 league goals, while Darko Kovačević added 20. Midfielder Xabi Alonso also played a major role and was later named the best Spanish player in the league by Don Balón.

Real Sociedad led the table for significant stretches, but the title race turned late in the season. A defeat away to Celta Vigo hurt their chances, and Real Madrid secured the championship on the final day. The runners-up finish was especially notable because Real Sociedad had ended each of the previous three seasons in 13th place.
