Which La Liga club plays at the San Mamés Stadium? Athletic Bilbao plays its home matches there.

The stadium is in Bilbao, in Spain’s Basque Country, and is officially known as San Mamés. It opened in 2013, replacing the historic stadium of the same name, which had served as Athletic’s home from 1913 until its demolition in 2013. Athletic moved into the new ground during the 2013–14 season.

San Mamés is often called “La Catedral,” or “The Cathedral,” a nickname inherited from the old stadium. The name San Mamés comes from Saint Mammes, an early Christian martyr associated with lions; that story also explains Athletic’s nickname, “Los Leones,” or “The Lions.”

A common mix-up is confusing Athletic Bilbao with Real Sociedad, another prominent Basque club. Real Sociedad plays in nearby San Sebastián, at the Reale Arena. San Mamés has also hosted Basque national-team matches, rugby events and major concerts, but Athletic remains its principal football tenant.
