Which La Liga club is based in San Sebastián?
Answer
Real Sociedad
Answer
Real Sociedad
Real Sociedad is the La Liga club based in San Sebastián.
Real Sociedad de Fútbol is a Spanish professional club from San Sebastián, the coastal city in the Basque Country. The club was founded on September 7, 1909, after football had already taken root locally through earlier teams formed by students and workers returning from Britain.
Its name has changed briefly during Spain’s political history. In 1931, during the Second Spanish Republic, the club became Donostia Club de Fútbol; it returned to Real Sociedad after the Spanish Civil War in 1939. “Donostia” is the Basque name for San Sebastián, which explains why both names appear in historical references.
Real Sociedad is nicknamed La Real and Txuri-Urdin, meaning “the White-and-Blues,” after its traditional colours. The club won consecutive La Liga titles in 1980–81 and 1981–82, its only league championships. Its home ground is commonly known as Anoeta Stadium, though sponsorship has led to names such as Reale Arena.
Athletic Bilbao is another famous Basque club, but it is based in Bilbao, not San Sebastián.
