Ujima is the third of Kwanzaa’s seven principles, known collectively as the Nguzo Saba. Its name is Swahili, and its central idea is that people should build and maintain their community together while treating one another’s problems as shared responsibilities.
Kwanzaa’s principles are assigned to one day each from December 26 through January 1. Ujima is observed on December 28, the third day. It is often confused with Ujamaa, the fourth principle, which means cooperative economics and focuses on supporting community-owned businesses.
The Nguzo Saba were developed by Maulana Karenga in 1965, a year before he created Kwanzaa. Together, the principles form Kawaida, a communitarian philosophy emphasizing African-American cultural identity, collective responsibility, and community development.
