Karenga drew inspiration from African first-fruits traditions, while shaping a modern holiday for African Americans. Kwanzaa runs from December 26 through January 1 and incorporates Swahili names, the seven principles of the Nguzo Saba, and symbols such as the kinara, African crops, and the black, red, and green flag.
From California, the observance spread through African-American communities elsewhere in the United States and later among parts of the African diaspora. It has been observed in countries including Canada, Britain, Jamaica, Barbados, and Brazil. California is therefore the state connected with Kwanzaa’s creation, not merely an early place where it became popular.
