The Korean province especially associated with Ganggangsullae is Jeollanam-do.
Ganggangsullae is a Korean circle dance and folk song traditionally performed by women. It is strongly associated with the southwestern coastal area, particularly Jeollanam-do, where communities performed it during major seasonal celebrations including Chuseok and Daeboreum.
Participants join hands and move in a circle while singing. The performance can change speed and include different formations or short dramatic movements. Historically, it served as both communal entertainment and a way for women to gather during festival nights.
Ganggangsullae is not limited to one modern stage version or one village. In 2009, UNESCO inscribed it on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The association with Jeollanam-do reflects its historical regional roots, not an exclusive legal restriction on where it may be performed.
