Minhwa, Korean folk art, inspired Jinu’s tiger and magpie in KPop Demon Hunters.
Jinu is accompanied by a blue pet tiger and a six-eyed magpie. The creative team based these animals on minhwa, a Korean folk-art tradition popular during the Joseon period. Their designs draw particularly on the tiger-and-magpie imagery associated with the Hojak-do genre.
In that tradition, tigers, magpies, and pine trees often appear together. The imagery could carry a playful or satirical attitude toward authority, which suits the film’s whimsical treatment of Jinu’s unusual companions. The magpie’s mischievous behavior, including stealing the tiger’s hat, echoes a long-running visual joke in Korean art.
The tiger was colored bright blue to make it feel magical. The animals also help connect the human and demon worlds, while their exact nature remains mysterious. They are therefore more than comic sidekicks: they are visual links to Korean heritage and the film’s supernatural mythology.
