The Goryeo dynasty ruled when Kim Busik compiled the Samguk sagi, the chronicle describing Chuseok’s Gabae story.
Kim Busik completed the Samguk sagi in 1145, during the Goryeo dynasty. Although the chronicle describes much earlier events in Silla, Goguryeo, and Baekje, it was produced in the Goryeo period as an official historical work.
This timeline matters when interpreting Chuseok’s origin story. The account of King Yuri’s weaving contest was written many centuries after the supposed event, so it preserves an important tradition without functioning as a contemporaneous record. Chuseok itself developed through several overlapping harvest, family, lunar, and ancestor-related customs.
The Silla dynasty belongs to the period described by the chronicle, while Joseon followed Goryeo. Goguryeo was one of the ancient kingdoms covered by the book, not the dynasty ruling at the time of compilation.
