Which junior team did Gretzky play for when he first wore number 99? Gretzky first wore number 99 with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds.
Gretzky joined the Ontario Major Junior Hockey League’s Greyhounds for the 1977–78 season as a 16-year-old. He initially wanted number 9, honoring his idol Gordie Howe, but that number was already taken by teammate Brian Gualazzi. After briefly wearing number 14, he adopted number 99 on the suggestion of coach Muzz MacPherson.
The number quickly became inseparable from Gretzky’s identity. In his Greyhounds season, he scored 70 goals and recorded 112 assists for 182 points, establishing himself as a remarkable junior player before his professional career began.
The Greyhounds were based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and competed in the league now known as the Ontario Hockey League. Gretzky later wore 99 with the Edmonton Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, St. Louis Blues and New York Rangers. The NHL retired number 99 league-wide in 1999.
