Answer
Triple jump
Which jumping event has hop, step, and jump phases? The answer is the triple jump.
In this horizontal jumping event, an athlete runs down a runway, takes off from a board, and completes three connected phases: a hop, a step (also called a bound), and a final jump into a sandpit. The athlete must land the hop on the same foot used for takeoff, then land the step on the opposite foot before launching the jump.
The event is sometimes called “hop, step and jump,” which makes the answer easier to remember. It is commonly confused with the long jump, but the long jump has one takeoff and one flight phase rather than three successive actions.
Triple jump has been part of the modern Olympic program since 1896 for men; the women’s event was added at the 1996 Atlanta Games. Its roots are often linked to ancient Greek jumping contests, although the modern rules and technique developed much later.
