Which Jewish historian wrote about the Maccabees in Antiquities of the Jews?

The story behind the answer

The Jewish historian who wrote about the Maccabees in Antiquities of the Jews was Josephus.

Flavius Josephus was a first-century Jewish aristocrat, military commander, and historian who wrote in Greek under Roman patronage. Completed around 93–94 CE, Antiquities of the Jews presents a 20-volume history of the Jewish people from creation through the first century. Its Book 12 covers the period from Alexander the Great through the Maccabean Revolt and the death of Judas Maccabeus.

Josephus was not a contemporary of the revolt, which occurred more than two centuries earlier. He drew on earlier written sources, including traditions related to the Books of Maccabees, and reshaped the material for a Greco-Roman readership. His account is valuable but should be read critically because he wrote with particular purposes and perspectives.

A common mix-up is confusing Josephus with Philo, another important Jewish writer. Philo lived around the same period as Josephus but was primarily a philosopher and interpreter of Judaism, not the author of Antiquities of the Jews.
