Which Jerusalem shrine contains the Foundation Stone?

The story behind the answer

The Jerusalem shrine that contains the Foundation Stone is the Dome of the Rock.

The Dome of the Rock is an Islamic shrine at the center of the Temple Mount, within the wider Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem’s Old City. Its distinctive gold-covered dome and octagonal plan surround the exposed rock known as the Foundation Stone, or Noble Rock. The stone is a central focus of religious traditions connected with both Judaism and Islam.

Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik commissioned the shrine, which was completed in 691–692 CE. In Jewish tradition, the Foundation Stone is associated with the Holy of Holies and with the beginning of creation. Islamic traditions connect the rock with Muhammad’s Night Journey, although interpretations differ over whether the ascent occurred specifically from the rock or from the wider sacred precinct.

A common mix-up is to identify the stone with Al-Aqsa Mosque. Al-Aqsa is the name of the larger mosque and compound, while the Dome of the Rock is the separate shrine built directly over the Foundation Stone. The stone is also associated with a cavern below called the Well of Souls.
