Which Japanese era name gives its name to the Reiwa era of professional sumo tournaments?

The story behind the answer

The Reiwa era name gives its name to the Reiwa era of professional sumo tournaments.

Japan’s Reiwa era began on 1 May 2019, when Naruhito became emperor. Sumo records and tournament histories often group events by Japanese era, so tournaments held from that date onward are described as taking place in the Reiwa period.

The name Reiwa is commonly translated as “beautiful harmony.” It was announced by the Japanese government before the imperial transition and became the country’s official era name.

Reiwa followed Heisei, which began in 1989, and Shōwa, which began in 1926. Era names are useful in sumo history, but they are not ranks, divisions, or tournament titles.
