Which Japanese city hosts the January, May, and September grand sumo tournaments?

The story behind the answer

Tokyo hosts the January, May, and September grand sumo tournaments.

These three tournaments are held at the Ryōgoku Kokugikan in Tokyo’s Sumida ward. The arena is widely regarded as the home of professional sumo and contains the main dohyo used for the Tokyo tournaments.

The other three annual tournaments travel outside Tokyo: Osaka hosts the March event, Nagoya hosts the July event, and Fukuoka hosts the November event. Together, the six tournaments form the regular honbasho calendar.

The Ryōgoku district has a particularly strong connection with sumo. The area contains sumo stables, the Japan Sumo Association’s headquarters, and the Ekō-in temple, which has historical links to the sport.
