Which Japanese castle is famous for its white plaster walls and nickname, the White Heron Castle?

The story behind the answer

Himeji Castle is famous for its white plaster walls and nickname, the White Heron Castle. Its brilliant appearance comes from white plaster applied to walls and roofs, while its elegant shape is traditionally compared with a white heron taking flight.

The castle’s main complex was greatly expanded in the early 17th century under Ikeda Terumasa, who ruled Himeji after the Battle of Sekigahara. The central keep and associated towers, gates, corridors, and defensive walls form one of Japan’s finest surviving castle ensembles. Its complex layout was designed to slow attackers rather than provide a simple route to the keep.

Himeji survived earthquakes, fires, war, and modernization with much of its historic structure intact. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Although often called a samurai castle, it was primarily a fortified residence and administrative center for successive domain lords, not just a battlefield stronghold.
