Which Italian university is conventionally dated to 1088 and is the oldest in continuous operation?
Answer
University of Bologna
Answer
University of Bologna
The University of Bologna is the Italian university conventionally dated to 1088 and regarded as the oldest in continuous operation.
Teaching in Bologna developed gradually around masters of law and organized groups of students. The institution became especially influential for its study of Roman and canon law, attracting learners from different parts of Europe. Its Latin motto, Alma Mater Studiorum, means “Nourishing mother of studies.”
The 1088 date is conventional rather than an uncontested founding day. In the nineteenth century, historians led by Giosuè Carducci traced the university’s origins to that year. The university received the Authentica habita from Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I Barbarossa in 1158, granting important rights to students and scholars.
Bologna also has notable gender-history milestones. Bettisia Gozzadini earned a law degree there in 1237 and later taught, becoming one of the first women to obtain a university degree and teach at a university. The institution remains a major public research university in Italy.
