Who developed the kindergarten concept in 19th-century Germany and coined the term “kindergarten”?

The story behind the answer

Friedrich Fröbel developed the kindergarten concept in 19th-century Germany and coined the term “kindergarten.”

Fröbel was a German educator who believed young children needed an educational environment designed around play, activity, creativity, and close contact with nature. In 1837, he established an institution in Bad Blankenburg devoted to the education of young children.

He called the approach Kindergarten, meaning “children’s garden.” The phrase described both a nurturing environment and a place where children could grow through carefully guided activities. Fröbel created educational materials called “gifts,” including geometric blocks and other objects used for building and pattern-making.

Fröbel’s ideas spread internationally through trained teachers, especially women who established kindergartens in Europe and North America. The word entered many languages, although the educational methods associated with it have changed considerably over time.
