Titian created the Venus of Urbino in 1538.
The painting is a reclining nude woman shown indoors, accompanied by a small dog and attended by figures in the background. It was commissioned by Guidobaldo II della Rovere, Duke of Urbino, and entered the collection connected with the duke’s family. The title “Venus of Urbino” was assigned later, linking the image to the classical goddess of love.
Titian’s warm color, sensuous surface, and confident handling of the female figure became influential in European painting. Scholars have debated the woman’s identity and the painting’s exact meaning, including whether it functioned as a marriage image, an erotic work, or both. Those interpretations vary, but the date, artist, and connection to the Urbino court are firmly established.
