Which Italian Renaissance artist painted the dramatic 1601 Supper at Emmaus in Rome?

The story behind the answer

Caravaggio painted the dramatic 1601 Supper at Emmaus in Rome.

The painting depicts the moment when the risen Jesus reveals his identity to two disciples at Emmaus. Caravaggio emphasizes the revelation through a tightly cropped table scene, strong contrasts of light and shadow, and figures who appear to project into the viewer’s space. One disciple stretches his arms outward, while the other grips the chair as he reacts.

Caravaggio’s naturalistic style was controversial and influential. He used ordinary-looking models rather than idealized classical figures, while his theatrical illumination intensified the religious drama. The London painting was commissioned by Ciriaco Mattei and is now in the National Gallery. It is distinct from Caravaggio’s later Supper at Emmaus, painted around 1606 and held in Brera, Milan.
