Which Italian designer founded Diesel in 1978?

The story behind the answer

Renzo Rosso founded the Italian denim brand Diesel in 1978.

Rosso established Diesel in Molvena, in Italy’s Veneto region, during a period when denim was becoming increasingly international and fashion-oriented. The company developed a distinctive identity through premium denim, unusual washes, bold advertising and an irreverent approach to branding.

Diesel’s name was chosen during the 1970s energy crisis, when diesel fuel was widely discussed as an alternative energy source. The choice was intended to sound international and memorable rather than tied to a single language or country.

Diesel is sometimes confused with other major Italian fashion houses founded by designers whose names became global brands. Armani, Prada and Versace are separate companies. Rosso’s best-known contribution to fashion history is the development of Diesel as a globally recognized premium-denim label.
