Which Italian artist painted The Birth of Venus in the 1480s?

The story behind the answer

The Italian artist who painted The Birth of Venus in the 1480s was Sandro Botticelli.

Botticelli, whose full name was Alessandro di Mariano di Vanni Filipepi, was a leading painter of Florence’s Early Renaissance. The large tempera-on-canvas painting is usually dated to about 1484–1486 and shows Venus arriving at the shore after emerging from the sea.

The scene draws on classical mythology and Renaissance interest in ancient Greek and Roman culture. Botticelli’s Venus stands on a shell, while the wind deity Zephyr and a companion blow her toward land; a figure representing one of the Horae approaches with a flowering cloak. The painting is now housed in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery.

People sometimes confuse it with Botticelli’s Primavera, another famous mythological work associated with the Medici circle. They are often discussed together, but they are separate paintings. Titian, Raphael, and Leonardo da Vinci were also major Italian Renaissance artists, yet none painted The Birth of Venus.
