Which island is home to the cattle of Helios?

The island home of the cattle of Helios is Thrinacia.

In Book 12 of Homer’s Odyssey, Thrinacia is the island where the sun god Helios keeps his sacred cattle and sheep. Helios’s daughters, Phaethusa and Lampetia, guard the animals, which are described as splendid, broad-browed, fat, and straight-horned. The island is therefore a final test of restraint for Odysseus and his exhausted crew.

The prophet Tiresias and the enchantress Circe both warn Odysseus not to harm the herds. After the crew is trapped on the island by unfavorable weather and runs short of food, Eurylochus persuades the men to slaughter the cattle while Odysseus is away praying. The crew feasts for several days, despite the animals’ divine status and their earlier oath.

Lampetia tells Helios, who demands punishment. Zeus later destroys the ship with a thunderbolt, killing every crew member except Odysseus. Thrinacia is sometimes identified by later writers with Sicily, and the name is occasionally spelled Thrinakia. Scheria belongs to the Phaeacians, Aeaea to Circe, and Ogygia to Calypso.
