Which Islamic month contains Eid al-Adha?

The story behind the answer

Dhu al-Hijjah is the Islamic month that contains Eid al-Adha. It is the twelfth and final month of the Islamic calendar, and the festival occurs during its annual pilgrimage season.

The first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah are especially important in Islam. Hajj rites take place in and around Mecca during this period, with major ceremonies including standing at Arafat on 9 Dhu al-Hijjah. Eid al-Adha follows on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah.

Dhu al-Hijjah should not be confused with Dhu al-Qadah, the month immediately before it. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the month begins about eleven days earlier each Gregorian year. Eid al-Adha therefore does not remain fixed in a particular Western-calendar season, unlike holidays tied to the solar calendar.
