Released in 1978, “Dawn of the Dead” was written and directed by George A. Romero and continues his influential series of zombie films. Although it does not bring back the original film’s characters or location, it expands the story from one isolated farmhouse to a society-wide catastrophe, following survivors who take refuge in a suburban shopping mall.

The film was partly financed through a partnership with Italian filmmaker Dario Argento, who also helped distribute it internationally. Special makeup effects by Tom Savini became one of the movie’s defining features, while the mall setting allowed Romero to satirize consumer culture and mass consumption alongside the horror.

A common mix-up is the 2004 “Dawn of the Dead,” directed by Zack Snyder. That movie is a remake of Romero’s 1978 sequel, not the original sequel itself. Romero’s next official continuation was “Day of the Dead,” released in 1985.
