Which IPL franchise is based in New Delhi?

The story behind the answer

Delhi Capitals is the IPL franchise based in New Delhi. The team represents Delhi and plays its principal home matches at Arun Jaitley Stadium, formerly known as Feroz Shah Kotla.

The franchise was established in 2008 as the Delhi Daredevils, one of the original eight IPL teams. It changed its name to Delhi Capitals in December 2018 after JSW Sports became a co-owner alongside the GMR Group. The new name references Delhi’s status as India’s national capital.

Delhi Capitals reached their first IPL final in 2020, when they finished runners-up to Mumbai Indians. The name can cause confusion because several franchises represent broad regions rather than a single city: Punjab Kings represent Punjab, Rajasthan Royals represent Rajasthan, and Lucknow Super Giants represent Lucknow. None of those teams is the New Delhi franchise.
