Quenya is the invented language of J.R.R. Tolkien largely inspired by Finnish.
Tolkien developed Quenya as a language of the Elves, especially associated with the High Elves and the traditions of Valinor. Its sound patterns and grammar drew strongly on Finnish, while its vocabulary and history were shaped within Tolkien’s wider fictional linguistic family.
Quenya was not created merely as a collection of fantasy words. Tolkien was a professional philologist who designed related languages with historical development, sound changes, and grammatical relationships. This approach gave his legends a sense of linguistic depth unusual in earlier fantasy literature.
Sindarin is the other major Elvish language in Tolkien’s fiction and was influenced more strongly by Welsh. Quenya remained important in formal, poetic, and ceremonial contexts, while Sindarin was more widely spoken among Elves in Middle-earth during much of the Third Age.
