Which international badminton team tournament is contested for the men's world championship?

The story behind the answer

The Thomas Cup is the international badminton team tournament contested for the men's world championship.

Officially called the BWF Thomas & Uber Cup Finals when held alongside the women's event, the Thomas Cup is a team competition for national men's teams. A tie traditionally consists of three singles matches and two doubles matches, with the first team to win three matches taking the tie.

The trophy was donated by Sir George Alan Thomas, an English badminton player and administrator, and the first tournament was held in 1948–49. The competition was initially staged every three years, but it later moved to a two-year cycle.

The Thomas Cup is often confused with the Uber Cup, which is the equivalent women's team championship. The Sudirman Cup is different again: it is a mixed-team world championship combining men's and women's singles and doubles. The All England Open is an individual tournament, not a national team championship.
