Aston “Family Man” Barrett primarily played bass guitar for Bob Marley and the Wailers.
Barrett became one of reggae’s most influential bass players and served as musical director of the Wailers’ band. His deep, melodic bass lines were central to the group’s sound, especially after the band moved toward the internationally recognized roots-reggae style of the 1970s.
He and his brother Carlton Barrett formed the rhythm section known as the Barrett brothers. Carlton played drums, while Aston supplied bass. Their tightly interlocking parts helped make the Wailers’ recordings distinctive and influential.
A common mix-up is to assign the drums to Aston because both brothers were major figures in the band. Carlton Barrett was the drummer. Aston Barrett also contributed to arrangements and production, making his role broader than that of a supporting instrumentalist.
