Which institution is Sri Lanka’s central bank and issuer of the Sri Lankan rupee?

The story behind the answer

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka is Sri Lanka’s central bank and issuer of the Sri Lankan rupee.

It was established in 1950 as the Central Bank of Ceylon, following recommendations from the 1949 report of the John Exter mission. Ceylon became Sri Lanka in 1972, and the institution adopted its present name in 1985.

The bank conducts monetary policy, regulates and supervises financial institutions, manages official reserves, and oversees payment and settlement systems. It also advises the government on economic and financial matters.

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka should not be confused with Bank of Ceylon or People’s Bank. Those are commercial state-owned banks, whereas the central bank is the country’s monetary and regulatory authority.
