Which institution has been Fiji’s central bank since the Reserve Bank of Fiji began operating in 1984?

The story behind the answer

The Reserve Bank of Fiji has been Fiji’s central bank since it began operating in 1984.

The institution was established under the Reserve Bank of Fiji Act 1983 and started operations the following year. Its headquarters are in Suva, Fiji’s capital and largest city.

The Reserve Bank of Fiji is responsible for monetary policy, issuing Fiji’s currency, supervising financial institutions, and managing foreign reserves. It issues the Fijian dollar, which is divided into 100 cents.

The bank should not be confused with Fiji’s commercial banking institutions, including Westpac Fiji or the Bank of Baroda Fiji. The Reserve Bank is the national monetary regulator rather than a customer-facing commercial bank.
