Which institution is Norway’s central bank, founded in 1816 by an act of the Norwegian Parliament?

The story behind the answer

Norges Bank is Norway’s central bank, founded in 1816 by an act of the Norwegian Parliament.

The Storting established Norges Bank on June 14, 1816, several years after Norway entered a union with Sweden. The new institution was intended to provide an organized monetary authority for the Norwegian state.

Today, Norges Bank conducts monetary policy, promotes financial stability, manages the government’s petroleum-related investment through the Government Pension Fund Global, and issues Norway’s banknotes and coins. Its headquarters are in Oslo.

Norges Bank is distinct from DNB, Norway’s largest commercial bank. The similar national association in their names can make the institutions easy to confuse, but their legal roles are very different.
