Which institution is Mexico’s central bank and issuer of the Mexican peso?

The story behind the answer

The Bank of Mexico is Mexico’s central bank and issuer of the Mexican peso.

Known in Spanish as Banco de México and commonly abbreviated as Banxico, the institution began operations on September 1, 1925. Its creation followed years of debate about establishing a central monetary authority after the Mexican Revolution.

The Bank of Mexico is constitutionally autonomous. Its primary objective is to preserve the purchasing power of the currency, while it also promotes the sound development of the financial system and the proper functioning of payment systems.

The bank is sometimes confused with commercial institutions such as Banco Nacional de México, commonly called Banamex. Banamex is a commercial bank; the Bank of Mexico is the country’s central bank and has authority over monetary policy and currency issuance.
