Which institution became Japan’s central bank when it was established in 1882?
Answer
Bank of Japan
Answer
Bank of Japan
The Bank of Japan became Japan’s central bank when it was established in 1882.
The bank was created under the Bank of Japan Act and began operations in October 1882. Its establishment followed Japan’s Meiji-era financial reforms, which sought to create a unified monetary and banking system modeled partly on European institutions.
The Bank of Japan received the exclusive right to issue banknotes in 1884. It also became responsible for monetary policy, the stability of the financial system, and serving as banker to the Japanese government.
The Bank of Japan is distinct from the Bank of Tokyo, the Yokohama Specie Bank, and other commercial institutions. It remains Japan’s central bank, and its headquarters are in Nihonbashi, Tokyo.
