Which bank became the first central bank of Mexico when it began operations in 1925?
Answer
Bank of Mexico
Answer
Bank of Mexico
The Bank of Mexico became Mexico’s central bank when it began operations in 1925.
The bank was created under Article 28 of Mexico’s Constitution and began operating on 1 September 1925. Its establishment fulfilled a long-standing post-Revolution goal of creating a single institution responsible for issuing currency and supporting monetary order.
The Bank of Mexico, known in Spanish as Banco de México, received an exclusive legal role in issuing banknotes. It also developed responsibilities involving reserves, financial stability and monetary policy.
The institution is often confused with Nacional Financiera or the National Bank of Mexico, both important Mexican financial institutions but not the country’s central bank. The Bank of Mexico later gained operational autonomy, which was constitutionally strengthened in 1994.
