Which Indonesian badminton player won men's singles gold at the 1992 Olympics?
Answer
Alan Budikusuma
Answer
Alan Budikusuma
Alan Budikusuma won men’s singles gold for Indonesia at the 1992 Olympics.
Budikusuma became the first Olympic champion in men’s singles badminton when the sport made its official medal debut at the Barcelona Games. He defeated Malaysia’s Foo Kok Keong in the final and secured Indonesia’s second singles gold of the Games after Susi Susanti won the women’s event.
His Olympic victory was part of a historic Indonesian achievement: Susanti and Budikusuma later married, and both were inducted into the Badminton Hall of Fame. Their Barcelona titles remain among the most celebrated moments in Indonesian badminton.
Budikusuma’s name is sometimes confused with other Indonesian stars. Taufik Hidayat won Olympic men’s singles gold at Athens 2004, while Rudy Hartono was an earlier All England champion. Those are different achievements and different players.
