Which Indian city was largely designed by Le Corbusier?
Answer
Chandigarh
Answer
Chandigarh
The Indian city largely designed by Le Corbusier is Chandigarh.
Chandigarh was planned as a new capital after the 1947 Partition of India and Pakistan left the former Punjab capital, Lahore, in Pakistan. Le Corbusier took charge of the master plan in the early 1950s, building on earlier work by American planner Albert Mayer and Polish architect Maciej Nowicki.
Le Corbusier worked with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret and the British architects Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry. The plan organized the city into sectors, linked by a hierarchy of roads and separated from heavy traffic. Le Corbusier personally designed the monumental Capitol Complex, including the High Court, Secretariat and Palace of Assembly, along with landmarks such as the Open Hand monument.
Chandigarh is often described as “Le Corbusier's city,” but that shorthand can obscure the collaborative nature of the project and the contributions of Indian architects and planners. It is a Union Territory and serves as the capital of both Punjab and Haryana. Its Capitol Complex joined UNESCO's World Heritage List in 2016.
