In which city is Le Corbusier's Immeuble Clarté located?
Answer
Geneva
Answer
Geneva
Le Corbusier's Immeuble Clarté is located in Geneva, Switzerland.
Immeuble Clarté is an apartment building designed by Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret. It stands on Rue Saint-Laurent in Geneva and was developed as an early experiment in applying modernist principles to collective housing. The building uses reinforced-concrete construction, extensive glazing, and flexible apartment layouts rather than a rigid traditional plan.
Construction took place in 1931–32, following design work that began in 1928. The nine-storey building contains 45 apartments with varied configurations. Its free-plan organization allowed the interior arrangements to differ from one dwelling to another, reflecting Le Corbusier’s interest in adaptable modern housing.
Immeuble Clarté survived threats of demolition in the twentieth century. It was recognized as a historic monument in Geneva in 1986 and became part of the UNESCO World Heritage inscription covering selected works by Le Corbusier in 2016. Geneva is therefore not just a nearby association: it is the building’s actual city and Swiss setting. Zurich is also Swiss, but it is not where Immeuble Clarté stands.
