Construction took place from 1922 to 1931, during a period when Brazilian Catholic leaders and community groups promoted a prominent Christian monument above the city. Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa designed the project, while French-Polish sculptor Paul Landowski created the sculptural elements. The statue is made of reinforced concrete covered with soapstone tiles, chosen because the material withstands Rio's humid climate.

Christ the Redeemer itself is about 30 meters tall, or 38 meters when its pedestal is included. Corcovado is a 710-meter granite peak within Tijuca National Park. A common mix-up is confusing the statue with Sugarloaf Mountain, another famous Rio landmark; Sugarloaf has no comparable statue at its summit. The site became one of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007.
