Which island in Argentina is located east of Tierra del Fuego and is a wildlife reserve?

Isla de los Estados is the Argentine island east of Tierra del Fuego that is protected as a wildlife reserve.

The island lies about 29 kilometres from Tierra del Fuego, separated by the Le Maire Strait. Its rugged coastline, forests, mountains and isolated coves support penguins, seals, sea lions, seabirds and other marine wildlife. Argentina recognizes it as an Ecological, Historical and Tourist Provincial Reserve, and access is restricted.

The island also has an important maritime history. The famous San Juan de Salvamento lighthouse stood here and inspired the setting of Jules Verne’s fictional lighthouse story. The island’s English name, Staten Island, comes from its Dutch name, Stateneiland.

A common mix-up is Isla de los Lobos, whose name refers to sea lions, or Isla Grande de Tierra del Fuego, the much larger island separated from it by the strait. Isla Navarino is instead part of Chilean Tierra del Fuego.
