Which Icelandic volcano erupted in 2010 and disrupted air travel across Europe?
Answer
Eyjafjallajökull
Answer
Eyjafjallajökull
Eyjafjallajökull was the Icelandic volcano that erupted in 2010 and disrupted air travel across Europe.
The eruption began in March 2010 at Fimmvörðuháls, a pass between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull ice caps. A larger explosive phase began in April beneath the ice-covered summit crater. Meltwater and volcanic ash created serious hazards for nearby communities and aviation.
The ash cloud led to widespread temporary airspace closures in April 2010. The disruption became globally famous, partly because the Icelandic name was difficult for many broadcasters and travelers to pronounce. Eyjafjallajökull is both the name of the volcano and the glacier covering much of its summit.
